Mosquitoes and Ticks Will Be Around Awhile Longer

Mosquitoes will remain active until temperatures drop consistently into the 50s at night.
Mosquitoes will remain active until temperatures drop consistently into the 50s at night.

For kids all over Birmingham, school is in session.  Leaving the freedom of the backyard and the community playgrounds, it’s back to books and the spirit of fall. Though the kids are gone from the backyard during the day, the season isn’t over for the pests that call your property home. Mosquitoes will remain active through September and even into October if fall is warm. Ticks actually have two peaks during their season. The first, consisting of nymph ticks, has already passed, but adult ticks will emerge in September and peak in October and November.

Both mosquito and tick activity depends on low temperatures. When nightly low temperatures drop consistently into the 50’s, you will begin to notice fewer and fewer mosquitoes. Ticks are more resilient and can be active anytime the temperature is above 45 degrees. While you will notice more ticks when the temperatures are warmer, adult ticks can even survive the winter by hibernating under fallen logs or thick leaf cover. Most adult mosquitoes will die off as temperatures drop, leaving their eggs and larvae to create next year’s population.

Ticks can be active any time the temperature is over 45 degrees.

Mosquito and tick control remains important during late summer and early fall. Not only will it continue to protect you from painful and potentially disease-carrying bites, but it will also keep these populations down as we move into the colder months. This will mean fewer mosquito eggs and larvae and fewer ticks in all stages that can survive the winter. Mosquito and tick control now not only impacts the quality of your outdoor time during late summer and early fall. It can also impact these populations next spring and summer.

So be sure to put mosquito and tick control on your Fall plans. Grilling out for the big game? Got a fall wedding or birthday party? It will be more enjoyable and safer, when your yard is protected by the Squad. So contact Mosquito Squad of Birmingham today. We are running a special for the remainder of the season. You can get $25 off your mosquito and tick treatments. Call us today for bite-free, outdoor fun during the rest of summer and fall.

Mosquito Transmitted West Nile Virus is popping up in the Southeast.

Mosquitoes transmit diseases through a single bite.
Mosquitoes transmit diseases through a single bite.

Living in Birmingham, you probably know about West Nile virus and how it is transmitted from mosquitoes to humans through a single bite. You may even know someone who has contracted West Nile virus and may have heard there is already confirmed activity of it in the Southeast this year. Unfortunately, West Nile virus is not the only mosquito-borne disease we need to be aware of this year. There is Chikungunya, Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE)  and a few others that have been found in Alabama in the last few years.

Our barrier spray is applied to the vegetation in your yard to eliminate ticks.

Mosquito Squad of Birmingham is keeping an eye on the virus cases and research in an effort to help keep our residents safe. In addition to gaining knowledge about the viruses, we urge you to take mosquito control and protection in your yard seriously. Although no cases of West Nile Virus have been confirmed yet in the Birmingham area this year, there are confirmed cases of West Nile in Texas and Oklahoma and it will eventually make it to Alabama like it has in years past. These viruses can be controlled in your yard with Mosquito Squad of Birmingham’s highly effective Mosquito Barrier Protection plan. Our mosquito barrier treatment is applied to your foliage every 21 days to eliminate mosquitoes on contact. Because of the formulation of our product, it adheres to the leaves on your trees and bushes and will not wash away with the rain. Additionally, it creates a barrier around your property to keep additional mosquitoes away so they can’t breed additional generations within your yard. With our season long program, we return every 21 days to apply another treatment for continuous mosquito control.

Let’s work together to keep West Nile virus out of Birmingham by practicing effective mosquito control and prevention. Matt & Marty Lange copyOne call will provide you and your family the protection you need this summer from mosquitoes and the increasing number of diseases they can transmit.

Mosquito Squad of Birmingham Protecting Against Mosquitoes in Birmingham and in Africa

Chris Grandpre, CEO, installs mosquito nets in Africa.
Chris Grandpre, CEO, installs mosquito nets in Africa.

Mosquito Squad has always been a strong supporter of fighting Malaria in foreign countries and just recently, the Chairman and CEO of Mosquito Squad, Chris Grandpre, visited Africa along with a handful of others from Malaria No More. Chris wrote about his trip to Kenya and installing treated bed nets in several villages to prevent Malaria in the area. Insecticide treated bed nets protect up to two children, while they sleep at night; against mosquitoes and the deadly disease they transmit.

While Malaria was eradicated in the United States over 60 years ago, it is still a present danger in other areas of the world, specifically Africa. In fact, every 60 seconds a child dies of Malaria in Africa. That’s more than 1,300 children that lose their lives from a single mosquito bite every day. Mosquito Squad has teamed up with Malaria No More to help stop these unnecessary deaths. An initiative called the Power of One has been supported by Mosquito Squad to help end malaria deaths. The Power of One is simple: $1 provides medication to save one child at a time. It’s difficult to comprehend that $1 can save a life but that is the reality and you can participate in the Power of One campaign by visiting Malaria No More’s website.

Chikungunya Vaccine Showing Promise in Initial Stages

Mosquito Squad of Birmingham eliminates mosquitoes that can transmit diseases.
Mosquito Squad of Birmingham eliminates mosquitoes that can transmit diseases.

An experimental vaccine for the mosquito-borne virus Chikungunya looks to be very promising in the initial testing phases. Chikungunya, as you probably know from reading our blog, was brought back to the States by residents traveling to the Caribbean and other countries where it was prevalent. Although the same types of mosquitoes that transmit the virus were here in the States, at the beginning of the summer they had not begun transmission. That changed several weeks ago with the confirmation of the disease in mosquito samples and four people contracting the virus who had not traveled outside the United States.

While mosquitoes are now carrying the virus in the United States, researchers have quickly begun the development of a vaccine that could protect people from this particular illness. The first human trial showed promise in protecting people from Chikungunya. The next step is to test the vaccine in more people and various age groups. Although the illness does not discriminate, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems are more at risk.

Dr. Anthony Fauci talks about the vaccine in this video from CBSNews

While the news is positive, it will still take an additional 5 years of testing before the vaccine would be available to the public. And, remember, this is just one of about 550 different mosquito-borne viruses that could be transmitted. Fortunately, not all of those viruses are in our area but West Nile virus and others are which makes it important to prevent mosquito bites when you are outside. That’s where Mosquito Squad of Birmingham comes in. Our mosquito barrier spray eliminates up to 90% of mosquitoes – and ticks – on contact and continues eliminating for 21 days. At that point, we return for another treatment so End of Summer Special Sprayyour protection against mosquitoes is continuous. And, if you call right now, we are offering a summer protection special of 2 sprays for only $125. That will provide continuous protection for the remainder of the season so you and your family can enjoy the last of the summer nights in your yard without the threat of mosquitoes and the viruses they can transmit.

Mosquito Squad of Birmingham Eliminates the Maddening Web Spiders Create

carolina-wolf-spiderIn my humble opinion, there is nothing itsy bitsy about any kind of spider. Few insects are as creepy to me as spiders, especially when you are up close and personal with one. Alabama is home to 33 different species of spiders and while you may not be able to identify them all, several could very possibly make you shriek at the sight of them.

There’s more than one reason people do not want spiders around their homes. Some species of spiders can be very poisonous like the brown recluse, some are just downright ugly like the infamous wolf spider, and some are very frightening like the grey wall jumper, as they hop off walls during the day searching for their prey. No matter what type of spider you come in contact with, all are difficult to get rid of because of their territorial nature. And, poisonous or not, spiders can quickly take over your decks, porches and even interiors of your home in no time flat.

Garden_orbweaver_with_preyLuckily for you, Mosquito Squad of Birmingham can eliminate spiders around your home just as we do for mosquitoes and ticks. Since spiders have some of the same habits as the other pests we treat, Mosquito Squad of Birmingham’s special spider spray is effective at ridding them around your home. Our spider formula is added to our EPA registered barrier spray and applied around the outside of your home, concentrating on the foundation so spiders don’t have a chance to nest or breed or enter your home through door frame gaps, window frames, air vents or pipe runs.   Our effective barrier spray treatment is applied every 21 days, instantly eliminating spiders (and mosquitoes and ticks) on contact and continually protecting the area until its time for our next treatment.

Just as with mosquitoes and ticks, it is important to keep standing water out of your yard. Water is needed for breeding and water is often where bugs congregate, which is spiders main food source. Spiders will use these areas and the vegetation around the water to anchor their super sticky webs to capture their next meal.

Contact Mosquito Squad of Birmingham today to schedule your spider control program. Spiders will be eliminated immediately and will not return this season. That means no spiders to squash, no spider droppings to deal with and no sticky webs that require super quick ninja skills to get through. But mostly, it means peace of mind for you. Mosquito Squad of Birmingham can take care of your all your spider, mosquito, tick and flea problems this year with one simple phone call. And our service is backed by our 100% satisfaction guarantee. Call us today for spider protection tomorrow. (205) 380-7755

Mosquito Viruses in the Birmingham Area – Let Mosquito Squad of Birmingham Keep You Safe

If you’ve been reading our blog you know that Chikungunya is not related to chickens at all but a rapidly spreading mosquito-borne virus that is new to the United States. The virus was brought back to the States by vacationers to the Caribbean and other exotic destinations where it has been spreading rapidly.

Mosquitoes transmit diseases through a single bite.
Mosquitoes transmit diseases through a single bite.

Last week the 5th case of Chikungunya was confirmed in Alabama and specifically right here in Jefferson County. At the time, Birmingham residents were still safe from local transmission because there was no evidence of mosquitoes in the states carrying the virus. But just this week two cases of local transmission were confirmed in Florida, where Chikungunya was first found. Neither of these people had traveled to an area where they could have been bitten which means the experts concerns have now been realized and local transmission has begun. They knew the possibility existed because it is the day feeding Asian Tiger mosquito, which was brought to the U.S. in a shipment of tires in 1985, that can spread the disease by biting and infected person and transmitting it to others.

Since we know the virus in around our area, now it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and your family from the possible transmission of the disease. One bite is all it takes so let Mosquito Squad of Birmingham eliminate mosquitoes in your yard with our barrier spray treatment. Our mosquito barrier spray is applied every 21 days for continuous protection on the foliage in your yard. When mosquitoes land to feed on the plant juices or to rest, they are eliminated on contact. It also provides an effective barrier around your property to keep additional mosquitoes from entering. It is the most effective mosquito control for your yard.

Don’t take a chance with Chikungunya spreading so quickly and West Nile virus starting to make some headway as well. Both of these mosquito viruses can cause painful symptoms and both can be avoided by calling Mosquito Squad of Birmingham. One call to our office and we’ll get you on our schedule for our highly effective barrier spray treatment. You’ll be able to enjoy the rest of the summer mosquito free and stay safe from Chikungunya, West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne diseases.
